There's no real reason you couldn't do the paddling motion while on a
stool or chair. For example the type of paddling they do for Dragon Boat
races:

I've also seen (and done) paddling while on one knee which would probably
work equally well with one leg up on a chair.
Not only to you stay dignified but you also still have to use your
balance.
