My sledge has a fiberglass handle and it's just fine. Wood might have 
a better feel, but I use the sledge for real world stuff, too, and 
fiberglass handles take abuse better.

And I use a tire in my workout every day. It's a 16" truck tire (I 

hope it's obvious: it's not mounted on a wheel). 

Sometimes I do shovelglove moves without the tire. Sometimes I beat 
the crap out of it. Rebound is not so much of an issue once you 
realize it does rebound a bit.
